Grad Trip Highlights - Day 14 Hallstatt! + Updates
havnt been updating recently! well, life's pretty slack so far. busy making use of this break meeting up with friends and doing things which i enjoy doing - photography walks, long and slow jogs, chilling at cafe, swimming, reading over a cup of coffee, sentosa and ktv sessions. School's reopening which means life will be back to the hectic and challenging days of practicum. =)
did up some long overdued photos - the fairy tale town of Hallstatt! i remembered the gasps on all of us where we were awe struck by the beauty of the lovely town while we were still on the boat. Brings back found memories - the carefree days of travelling with great companions. will there be grad trip part 2?

Stadium Waterfront
Found this nice and quiet place (even on a sat nite!) which's a good place to stroll and enjoy the scenery, away from the bustling town (though geographically it isnt tat far away from city hall). didnt bring my tripod out and hence the shots are all done handheld at 1600 iso, which explains the grainy photos. i really wanted to get a 50d + 11-16 + 18 -200 but till the time when i can bear to part with $3k i have to juz bear with my current setup.
btw it seems that tanjong rhu is a good place for hanky panky. 4 out of the 6 cars parked there are seen to be in action. ha=)

Jog to Henderson WavesSpent these 4 days of so call holiday break rushing lesson plans and nie assignment. When i have finally completed the nonsensical assignment, the sun was looking good - both for a jog and photo taking during the golden evening hours. Decided to rush up to henderson waves and i was lucky enough to get there before the sun sets =)
feels good to go for a jog after 4 long days of "powerpoint-ing"
life's kinda mundane. zzz

updates
woah havnt been blogging since dunno when. some updates:
well i'm pretty happy with my school posting - it feels good to roam around my alma mater after 8 long years. the bunch of trainee teachers are a pretty fun bunch of ppl, and though work load is pretty high, im glad to have ppl who i can have kopi break with, chill n makan dinner with, lame with, complain with. it kinda feels like the seconday school class time - sortof like some kind of class spirit which i'm feeling. can't exactly pen it down though. ha =)
photography - havnt had the time and energy to go shoot. i usually juz concuss once i reached back home. dying to get a sigma 18 -200 OS for the extra reach as i find it quite intrusive to do candid shots on my 18-55. thinking of trying out candid/portrait shots rather than scenery shots, something which i think i'm pretty familiar with.
car - though its expensive to maintain it, i'm really glad i made the decision. the convenience, the time saved, the comfort - they are all worth the costs. =)
most importantly, thanks for being there for me and being patient with me despite my busy schedule. love you deep deep =)
really tired, time to sleep. zzz

few lyrics can touch me as much as this.
Cant find any stars photos, so presenting to you an unedited photo of sunrise in athens, taken on the ledge beside the acropolis which turned out to be a hidden gem in disguise.

On a side note, life's been good. Taipei's great. cheap food, polite ppl, excellent service abeit poor weather in the 5 days there. and watching fireworks and spending the countdown on top of a random overhead bridge away from the crowds with you is perhaps the best moment of the trip. =)
back to reality, the ulu place in the north eastern corner of our island, whereby any further north you scroll in google maps will set ur eyes in a myriad of green and blue shades and nothing else. life's busy. fri weekly chill, sat gg out, and the luxury of not setting alarm clock on sundae seems more valuable and looked forward to every week.
i love learning but i hate to be confined. be it a definition, a theory, a group member or a lecturer. on the other hand, i need to be more receptive and less aggressive when i'm serious. watch my tone. ha =)
one more thing to look out for - always check my blindspots esp on the highway. ha =)

desire beckons but logic prevails.
so far so good.

my dream car.
alright. lets be more practical.

now we are talking.

Now, vios, jazz or swift?
after months of research, i have reached a conclusion..........
the ideal car for me will be..
SBS n SMRT!
woot! no worries of jam, no worries of car tailgating u, no worries of ERP, no worries of rising fuel cost, ability to do some work while on the move, ability to read papers on the move, ability to listen to my ipod.
i love public transport! =) juz give me more buses and trains reduce congestion have more bus services to the (#)*)(@ nie which in google map if u scroll north any further u will see our dear neighbour.
simply put, i'm not able to afford a car without my drastically reducing my savings. i really wonder how people with income less than 3k afford a car. yes its easy to own a car now with a full loan over 10 years. but do ppl find out more about interest paid, the breakeven year, the financial pothole they are getting themselves in?
whats the point of scrimping to feed a car if one can't even provide their parents with a good life? what's the point of enjoying a private journey only to find ways of gettin free parking and worrying abt $3 erp?
i don't own a car now. but i can still happily afford the occasional expresso frapp and ichiban, or getting parents their favourite food and jeans.
it's not that bad squeezing with the whole world during the morning and evening jam after all, if one takes a step back and look at the things he wouldn't have missed out without the toll of a petrol gulper.

got myself a 1 week mc cuz of a freak accident during a basketball session. drizzling rain + the worn out new balance shoes + no knee guard = sprained knee. =( went for a sensei but the swelling didnt go off. was quite worried as tat was my old injured knee when i was in pri 5, so rushed down to SGH for an x-ray. Luckily, no fracture seen. had some difficulties walking normally now but its recovering steadily.
well, finally have some time to review my photos. presenting to you, heidelberg, colonge and budapest! =)

when a museum gives you free chocolate to eat, u noe that its museum worth gg. =)

the biggest cathedral in europe, its grandness and sheer size is unmatched by any other cathedrals i've seen before.

panoramic view of heidelberg. =)

A panoramic view of budapest from st stephens cathedral. i love panorama shots.

to my one and only love,
Happy 24th!=)
hope you enjoyed yourself tonite!

Majestic restaurant (大华酒楼)doesn't disappoint me with its unique degustation menu. the best dish of the nite will be its peking duck. crispy skin, melts in ur mouth meat. yes it really melts in ur mouth! i'm simply stunned when i took my first bite! the wasabi came in 2nd with its unique but not overbearing blend of wasabi. Though im not a fan of wasabi, i enjoyed every bite of it! Salmon was really fresh, and the shark's fin is 真才食料!however its kinda exp, go once in a while kinda restaurant. hmm on hindsight i think i prefer equinox, which is cheaper, offers a much better view and excellent service. will def bring my parents here again for its chinese/cantonese cuisine. =)
oh check out yum.sg. majestic is ranked 2nd!
A bit on this week. slept at 2-3am for 2 nites to rush my assignment. not that its the tomo deadline muz hand up kind, but i juz felt that i've been slacking too much, time to get my engine started. heh.. enjoyin my life in nie, life's pretty good learning things vastly different fr hard sciences. was pretty intrigued by the discussion on the subjectivity of science. Contrary to wat the society sees, science isn't an objective study, it can be argued instead as a social construct when people strives to derive meaning to the world. Theories are invented to make sense of the world, and the study of physics as we noe today is actually a study of the interpretations of the various physicists had in the past. Hmm, take for example, gravity. Does gravity really exist? No one knows! However, Newton came up with a, to put it bluntly, story, to explain the phenomenon. So far this theory of gravitational attraction has been empirically adhered to, and hence it becomes a law. but the essence of this argument is that no one can be sure that gravity actually exists.
oh and the 煮炒 stall in nie canteen is the only redeeming worth of the forsaken rainforest. i dun really like mee goreng but i tot i ate probably the best mee goreng so far in my life todae. ha =)
ok back to work.

Payday
My first paycheck =)
rawks..
a good meal to top it off.
talkin abt money, im still in a dilemna with regards to getting my 4 wheels.
monthly cost of 1st hand car ownership
loan for car - $500
petrol - 1 tank per week (modest) - $200
parking - $90
cashcard (erp + weekend parking) - $50
insurance (1200/12 months) - $100
Total damage =
$940Monthly cost of 2nd hand car (7 years remaining)
loan for car over 7 years - $300
petrol - $200
parking - $90
cashcard - $50
insurance (2400/12) - $200
Total damage =
$840SO basically, 1k off paycheck.
Living expenses = $500
family = $1000
basically i can afford a car. at the expense of meagre saving every month.
also, i tink there isn't any point in getting a 2nd hand car. the difference in cost is not enuff to justify the quality of the vehicle. esp with regards to the much higher insurance premium.
so meanwhile, stick to more wheels - (MRT/bus)
or take the occasional 4 wheels (cab)
save up the money for hdb flat/wedding.
suddenly i tink im earning very little for myself. heh..
ok juz 2 NDP Preview photos. took quite a lot but didnt have time to go edit yet. i should learn to properly compose my photos b4 taking.

went bac to nj this morning, happy to see mr tek and miss sim still teaching in nj. apparently i dun recognise the rest of the teachers there now.. but its really heartwarming to go bac to my alma mater and see my teachers there.. =)
the walk down hillcrest road though, never fails to bring about an influx of memories.. ha.. hopefully as a physics major i can invent a way to time travel (some dude act came out with a possible theory, which involves the bending of space time when there's a infinity gravitational field, existence of wormholes, and tat the shortest distance between any 2 points is actually 0, as its possible to bend space time such tat you juz need to take one step to go fr pt A to any point B. heh)
heard this song which is quite special to me todae.. love the lyrics.. ha im a sucker for emo songs
我们都忘了
这条路走了多久
心中是清楚的
有一天有一天都会停的
谁还记得
是谁先说永远的爱我
以前的一句
是我们以后的伤口
ha =)

Chill + low cost day
Being my free day, the day started with a great morning sleep till 11am, which is followed by a visit to the basketball court for the generation of sweat. After a self made chrysanthemum ice blended and a long relax bath, i decided to make a trip down to the central lib to grab some books, which was followed by magazine browsing at kino. most of the magazines were wrapped up though, and i conclude that the most ideal place to browse for magazines will be none other than borders. Dinner with ck at the usual, with gyoza and chix rice and a cup of nice ice mocha. chit chat till the late evening and the nite ended with music on my newly acquired x-fi crystallizer in my aircon enclave web surfing on my 20inch widescreen.
i love free days to myself.

some updates.. just had my commencement a few days ago! glad to see all the physics majors, some perhaps for the last time for a long time to come. was thinking about lotsa things during the whole ceremony, reviewing the events that had happened during my past 4 years. though i didn't get into 1st class, my uni life is more or less very much an all rounded experience. first and foremost, i'm very blessed to have known u who genuinely care and complete me. next, i'm thankful for the frenships i am having now, from hall, from physics, and in nus. while most of them are acquantances, the few and countable close frenships i made will always be held dear to me. i'm glad to have been in cac, where i found back my lost esteem, and regained my confidence in managing ppl and events. i'm glad for my 4 years of learning, not only in physics, but also life skills and soft skills which i've learnt. i'm thankful to my prof, prof sow, who selflessly guided me through a not-so-smooth year 4, and most importantly, my parents who supported me all the while, beared with my bad temper. im really glad to see the smile on their faces during the ceremony, realy glad for u to be proud of me.. =))
mr zyy and pck took me by surprise with a visit to my house! ha.. that bugger came back without telling me. lol. was really glad to see zyy. even though he didn't slim down, he is still full of crap, evident still from the nite of crapping at timbre. sadly, he is not back in the land of ah tiongs. ha come back quick la then can go timbre every week!
work wise, entering the last week of my stay at queenstown. this time round my experiences at queenstown really sets me thinking hard about what i want in my career, the types of challenges i would wanna face, the types of setbacks which im prepared to brave, and the type of rewards which i will like to have. aniway, on a lighter side, we start to have this friday weekly chill out session for all teachers and frens to complain about students. haha.. =)
on a side note, i felt so tired everyday. still unable to switch to the sleep early wake up early lifestyle. well, its hard to change in a month a lifestyle i had for 4 years in hall. heh =)
time to sleep.

Day 34 Berlin
The travel had taken its toll on me, and i woke up a tired man today. nevertheless, the day was good!
Went for a free walkin tour, and again, the best things in life often come free. its one the of the best walking tours ive ever taken and the guide was reallz frenly informative and interesting.
Brandenburger Tor: This was built as a tribute to peace in the 18th centruz, and later came to szmbolize the cityäs division. After serving as the iconic backdrop for the fall of the Berlin Wall, the gate is now the most powerful emblem of reunited Germany.
Holocaust Memorial: Slabs of concrete of decreasing height as they stem out fr the middle of the big space which archs upwards away fr the center, the most beautiful thing abt this monument is that its open to interpretation. the middle section feels surprisinglz chilly in the afternoon hot sun.. perhaps symbolic of what the Jews suffered.
Hitler#s bunker, where he supposedly commited suicide at the end of WW2, is juz a barren land. with a sign.
The Franzdom and the Deutscher Dom, which looks alike, surround the Konzert Haus. looks normal though..
Bebelplatz, where books by 'subversive' authors were burned.A small glass window in the ground reveals emptz bookcases beneath. It faces the Humboldt Uni where Einstein taught b4. A statue of Helmholtz stands in front of the uni.
Berliner Dom. Simply, jaw dropping. its damn huge. looks really grand. one of the biggest Protestants church.
Sony center. nothing much. chilled at Dunkin doughnuts and fell asleep.
Reichstag: impressive oppressive building. glass dome offers panaromic view of the surroundings.
super long day ... off to bed.. back home in 2 days time!

Day 33 Athens
The day started with a trip to the olympian zeus, the largest temple ever built in greece. It was completed by Roman emperor Hadrian, who built a Hadrian Arch to mark the boudary between the ancient city Theseus and his new city. pretty impressive!
next up was the panathenaic stadium, which was carved into a hill side. pretty disappointing.. cuz it looks juz like any new stadium.
Agora was next. The Stoa of Attalos, a commonly photographed sight in CS, was marvelous. It was an ancient shopping mall and home to informal philosophers gatherings, and now it houses the Agora Museum.
The Hephaesteioin, on a hill in the northwest corner of the Agora, is the best preserved classical temple in Greece. Looks complete and impressive..
The keramikos is disappointing though. looks like a pile of rubble..
Did some souvenir shopping and then headed to the airport for our flight to Berlin, which was delayed for an hour..
the only 2 complaints abt athens are-
its damn sandy.
athens backpackers sux. dun go.

Day 30-32 Santorini
Santorini is an offshore island out of Greece, and boy this is my favourite place in Europe!! Took a 7 hours boat ride here, and what greeted us at the port is our frenly hostel owner, who fetched us in a minivan to the hostel! Hostel Manos turn out to be IMO the best hostel so far, the owners poppy and her husband are really frenly and enthusiastic, warm helpful and sincere. theres a private swimming pool, and the view rawks. woot
the architecture in Santorini is fabulous! white washed blockish buildings with blue coloured dome shaped roof etched on the hill sides make a damn nice foreground against the blue skies and seas.
took a tour to the volcano, with a not so easy trek up to the crater of the volcano, which is in the middle of Santorini, and the view is fantastic. took lotsa photos. next up was the supposedly hot spring waters, which turn out to be COLD! just slightly warmer than the ice cold water in the sea. and we have to jump in from the ship, into the open sea, swim a considerable 200meters in the open sea to where the warmer waters are, beside the rocks. the swim was taxing without goggles. ha took a lot out of me esp after the volcano trek..
the highlight of the tour would have to be the sunset at Oia. me and wj climbed up to a rooftop and enjoyed the sunset, with the whole rooftop to ourselves, while the rest of the place was crowded with tourists. rawks la.. took perhaps the nicest photo ive ever taken there, enuff said. =)
ok.. back to athens for 1 more day, and then berlin here we come. =)

Day 29 Athens
Athens was awesome! we touched down in the early morning, greeted with an advance and comfy airport and airport shuttle to town. couldnt check in so we went to this rocky place near the acropolis to watch the sunrise. overseeing athens and the acropolis, the sunrise was simply jaw dropping..
next up, after checking in, we roamed around plaka region, frapped on athens streets (apparently frappe is very popular here in the hot summer athens streets).
stayed till late on philippopou hill, overseeing the acropolis again, weith athens under our feet. chit chatted at the top of athens till 11plus, and went back for a good sleep.
people here are so frenly! in fact, this is the first european country which i didnt sense any racism! taxi drivers guided us to our hostel even though we didnt take the cab, restaurant owners gave us direction.. etc
athens rawks..

Day 24 & 25 Wroclaw
E churches in wroclaw impressed me tremendously. They r old n original n retain e peace n authenticity of the church, a trait lost in e many renovation n restoration works for other churches.
There's this church Cegielka Ziegelstein near e university quarters when we met a very frenly n non racist polish caretaker who brought me n gab ard e church for a tour, explaining to us e various parts. It was really kind of her to do tat n I was touched by her frenliness n passion.
E university church of e blessed name of Jesus (Kosciol Najswietszego Imienia Jezusa) is one of e prettiest interior I’ve ever seen. The late baroque church contains well preserved fresco on e vaults. Took a couple of nice interior shots.
St Mary Magdalene's church, though e interior pales in comparison, the ambience is really what a church should have. Peaceful n quiet, with music echoing along e hallway, I trully enjoy e time in e church.
Finally we climbed e 300 odd steps up e twisting staircase of e St Elizabeth's church 91m high tower. E view fr e top is more than worth it. =)
It sux to type using a pdA so I shall end here n go to zzz..

Day 23 Daytrip to Zakopane
Zakopane, 100km away from Krakow lies in a valley surrounded by jagged Tatran peaks and alphine meadows. Supposed to go there to climb this mountain which will bring us to the border between Poland and Slovakia. Took a 2 hours ride there, waited for 2 hours at the bottom of the hill for the cable car, which comes once every 15mins, to find out that the tickets are sold out. zzz apparently its some kind of children day or wat and there are hordes of kids which were in front of us. Screwed up administration.. why?
1. announcements and notices are all in polish.
2. only 1 cable car cabin
3. no efficient queue control
we werent the sway-est. apparently this australian guy stayin the same hostel as us reached there at 11, queued for 4 hours, and when its finally his turn in front of the ticket office, the tickets were sold out.
walked ard the town, which is pretty good as it isnt so touristy. the houses were nicely build.. wooden kind, and we found this meadow with green hills and snowly capped mountains as backdrop. took a couple of photos there and they turned out quite well.
took another 2 hours ride back to krakow and went for a nite walk alone to try out again, nite photography. didnt wanna drag the rest of the group down so decided to go alone.. always felt bad about lettin them wait for me.. realised a mistake which prevents me from gettin sharp night photos and the photos tonite actually came out quite well! also, my lens arent long enuff for the across the river kinda picture which is also partly the reason why the previous nite shots along the river photos didnt turn out quite well..
last nite at tom and greg, and its acutally by far the best hostel we've been IMO. free laundry, wireless, fast widescreen computers, lcd tv with ps2, free bf and supper, FREEFLOW COFFEE ALL DAY ROUND, nice beds and showers, im loving it here.
was on the bus today and suddenly tot abt the road trip to stratford and goderich 2 summers back.. still prefer a road trip even though its riskier driving in unknown territory and dealin with the left hand driving rules. perhaps its the freedom, no need to adhere to any bus timing, able to stop anitime we want when we see something interesting, less walking. now that i tink back, actually the dynamics of the toronto grp of 10 was perhaps one of the best ba.. it isnt a small grp but yet we didnt encounter any problems along the way and all of us got along very well.. ha =)
i miss ba chou mee. oh and miss kueh has safely landed back in SG and enjoyin the cheap and nice food all of us are craving for rite now (along with the sweltering heat).
she better not post ani ba chou mee photos. heh

Day 22 Wawel Castle and Surroundings, Krakow
Started off a slow day with a climb up the Wawel hill. It's a one way route and as we didn't know where to buy the tickets, we walked one round and have to climb down the hill and climb up again as its a supposedly one way route. Visited the state rooms, which is damn boring cuz there isnt ani description about the items in the rooms! For example, a chair was just labelled as - Chair. DUH.
The armoury didn't disappoint though, where sabres cannons swords and guns were on display. For the 1st time in my life i saw a gunblade! thought it only existed as Squall's lionheart in ff8. ha..
hmm i tink the architecture here is pretty nice, especially the buildings in the stare miasto.. not so artificial like the ones in prague..

Day 21 Auschwitz Birkenau Memorial and Museum
After resting in the morning, the afternoon began with a day trip to the Auschwitz Birkenau Concentration camp. An estimated 1.5 million people, mostly Jews, were murdered in the Nazi concentration camps at Auschwitz and Birkenau. The first thing that greeted us at Konzentrationslager Auschwitz I was the gates inscribed with the words - Arbeit Macht Frei, meaning work sets you free. ironic indeed. The passionate tour guide brought us thru the horrors and atrocities commited by the nazis, walking past the remains of thousands of lives - suitcases, shoes, glasses, tonnes of women hair - the sheer enormity of the atrocity begins to come into focus. Its easy to type it down in words, but the feeling when i see the tonnes of hair on display is really something which cant be described. the guide actually teared when she was at the hair chamber. another thing that struck me was the standing cell for 4 people. there is juz enuff space for 4 men to stand in that tiny windowless chamber, the entrance being a small trapdoor around 50cm tall.
We then proceed to the larger and starker Konzentrationslager Auschwitz II- Birkenau, 3 km away from the original camp. Birkenau was built later in the war. We can still see the ruins of the cremataria and the gas chambers. The nazis told the people sent into the camps that they are gg to settle down and start life anew in the new place, and when they reach Auschwitz, they were told that they were to go for a bath. They were lead into the gas chamber, stripped and naked, thinking that they are gg to have a bath after a long journey to the camp, man women and child alike, and poisoned to death. Genocide. I dunno issit only me or wat but even though its a hot and sunny day, the walk down the railway track after the tour brings a chill to me when the wind blows, perhaps echoing the scream and cries of the innocent. its indeed a sad but enriching visit.
oh, another thing.. krakow is damn beautiful. the architecture in the day, and at night. the people here are beautiful too! haha =)

Day 18 Prague~!
Perhaps my expectation of prague is too high, the city bores me with its first impression. overly touristy, non unique architecture, its like prague takes bits and pieces of other european cities and incorporate into the town. also, it looks like czech only manages to develop its capital without caring much about the other cities.
caught the astrononical clock at prague square in the morning.. didnt expect much after the disappointment in munich mariasplatz. walked a bit of the old town and the hill (forgot its name) which we took a funicular up. everythin's about money here. go up the hill need money. up the tower need money. go into maze need money. even go toliet need 10 kr (ard 1sing dollar!) zzz basically we went up the hill for nothing. no panaromic view cuz we dun wanna pay again to climb up the stupid tower. and we proposed that trees were planted to block out view of the city so tat ppl wanna climb the tower!
charles bridge is perhaps the only redeeming sight in Prague. evening time the view fr charles bridge looks very nice.. with the orangy-blue sunset setting behind the castle.
in short, prague disappoints. preferred vienna more..
met 3 problems while takin photos.. shall find out more when im back.
1. sun behind background with subject. how not to overexpose the sun and get the background sharp?
2. optimum way of takin subjects with nite time background.
3. nite long exposure shots are not sharp. something's wrong.. hmm used my sharpest aperture le but still dun help much.

Day 16 Salzburg
im bac here again! perhaps its the weather, salzburg looks less pretty than last summer. there are less flowers in mirabell garden, the trees grown so tall-tat they cover the fortress view, the city looks dirtier, theres a new golden ball near the giant chess set.
took a morning walk alone as i didn't wan to revisit tne fortress in such a weather and visited the panaroma museum & the catocombs.. enjoyed the walk alone taking photos.. without the need to worry abt dragged the group down. =)
and sir gabe saved me fr a dog shit. he asked me to blog one..

Day 13 in Vienna
short and sweet entry cuz we needa wake up at 5 am tomo to catch a train to hallstatt.
The day started with a walk in the museum quarter, where we saw this lomography shop. quite an interesting shop with nice photos. planned to look more into lomography when i go back sg. saw this singaporean exchange gal there too!
wanted to visit the science historz museum but it was closed on tues. zzz. and it rained the whole of today! dampens the mood.
shopped around town and got darlin something which she would like. hehe
met the rest at cafe central, the oldest cafe in vienna, and though the coffee sux, the sacher totre is much better than the one at demel.
went to the Haus der Musik, and it was the most interactive and fun museum ive been to! interactive electronic displays greeted us and we could spend 1 full day there!
ended the day with an opera. the opera house is damn pretty. ha.. the sets used were verz elaborate, and the acoustics was top notched.
gg to hallstatt tomorrow for the salt mine and the UNESCO world heritage village, a slight change in schedule as we were supposed to reach slazburg in the morning.
nite!

Day 11 n 12 in Vienna!
Vienna streets is my perception of what european streets look like - cobblestoned floors, individual unique gothic architecture with no repeated buildings, wide lively streets buzzing with people - of all the cities in europe i´ve been to, Vienna has to be the defining european city which attracts not because of it´s sights, but rather its atmosphere.
Sights aren't really fantastic here. Went for the Vienna boy choir, woke up at 6am for it, queued up only to be told to shift to another place to queue up, which turned out to be a treasury entrance. the same guy then asked us to stand in another queue. should have placed some signs and directions as to the queue for the standing tickets. nevertheless, we got into the church, to find out that its actually a sunday mass instead of a choir presentation. the worst thing is, the boys are high up on the top balcony which is out of sight and we could only hear them. now what kind of choir sings without showing their face? our trip for the vienna boys choir turn out to be a trip for a sunday mass and being unable to see the choir in action really starts the day off on a bad note. not to mention the fat auntie which keep wrestling us out of our place.
Now what is vienna without its coffeehouses? Went to this recommended place Demel for austria´s famous sacher torte, and had a cup of house coffee with orange liquer. even though the torte tasted good, i felt that its a tat over-rated. the coffee was fantastic though. the rich taste of vienna coffee with a tinge of orange and alcohol really sooths our spirit after the disappointing start to a day. however its the most exp coffee ive had so far - 8 euros for it.
next up - Stephansdom. in the heart of the city, it is one of vienna's most treasured symbols. the interior is fantastic, though it pales in comparison to the sacre coeur and notre dame in paris. decided to climb up the 343 steps up to the tower top for a supposedly panaromic view of the city but was greeted by a souvenior shop instead when we reach the top. and it isnt panaromic´- just simply 4 windows peering out of the souvenior shop. zzz. damn disappointed.
Visited the parliament and then it rain. heavily. stuck in the parliament house, we decided to play cards. yes. asshole 'daidee' outside of the austrian parliament house. heh..
finally, went for a mozart concert cum ballet dance cum opera at the hofburg palace. costs us 20 euros each and the room and stage was disappointing. however the violinists, the opera and the ballet dancers are damn good. i have no knowledge of all these arty farty thingy but it was an enjoyable show and i felt its worth every cent we paid. it felt better when we realised that some other people paid 36 euros for the same show. =)
day 12 started with a visit to the Schonbrunn Palace. Went for a walk in the rooms in the palace and as usual, the rooms are filled with an impressive display of the items in the castle. the walls and rooms looked very fake to me though. maintanience is necessary but i felt that they overdid it for this castle. i appreciate the garden much more than the castle. took a lot of photos there. played around in the maze too and it was an enjoyable trip to the castle. however, so far the prettiest garden i've seen still had to be the Fredisksberg (dunno how to spell and lazy to check) garden in copenhagen. ha..
the afternoon was spent at Kunst Haus Wien, a museum quoted as being constructed without striaght lines. well, 10 mins to be exact. turned out to be an art musuem, and i tot there will be displays and interactive artifacts. total waste of time. even frommers and lonely planet give perhaps an overated description sometimes.
the night ended on a good note with us gg to this eatery recommended by zhiqian's fren, whom we met in the afternoon at the palace. its called centimeters, and we had our fullest meal so far in europe with a 6 people 'The Sword', with Austria's signature dish - Wienerschnitzel, a turkey pork fried in butter, a pork chop, spicy sauce fries and chicken wings for 6 of us! it was simply fanstatic. and it costs onlz 7 euros! wooot! btw lonelz planet and frommer didnt recommned this!
alright gotta go do some plannin for salzburg while watin for the laundry.. damn tired though..

Day 10 in Bratislava!
Bratislava has to be the most haps place so far! we reached hostel blues at around 12 midnight and the streets are still buzzing with people and cars at that hour! Hostel blues is catered for backpackers like us. There's a bar, and the beds are big and comfy. People here generally are fluent with english, especially the youths.
The day started with a slow stroll up to Bratislava castle, which, pales in comparison to the castles in germany and budapest. the view's kinda good though, not fantastic, but the photos we took up there is perhaps our reward for climbing up the steep slope. and nope, we didnt miss any funicular this time as there simply isnt one.
ventured around old town in the afternoon and visited the primate's palace, which houses the hall of mirrors, which Napoleon and Franz I signed by proxy the Treaty of Pressburg in 1805, the result of the horrific Battle of Austerlitz (now in the Czech Republic). Some 50,000 French, Austrian, and Russian troops perished in what was called the ''Battle of Three Emperors,'' won by the French. Franz I surrendered not only substantial territory, but declared the end of the Holy Roman Empire to avoid ceding the title to Napoleon. Not fantastic as compared to the hall of mirrors in versailles, but nonetheless worth a look.
Spent the late afternoon chilling at coffee and co for a refreshing ice cold coffee with gabe and weijian. i tink a significant portion of my money goes towards to my daily coffee fix. ha =)
heading for the train station for vienna soon. blog again soon =)

Day 9 Last day in Budapest
Travelled up Danube bend for the town of Szentendre via a slow cruise up the river. pretty relaxing.. though there isnt much sights and things to do at Szentendre, we took the chance to chill and hang out at a cafe, people watching and enjoying the lazy afternoon with coffee.
plan for the next few days -- gg to take the evening train to bratislava for a day then will be in vienna for 4 days.
Woot!
Everyone back home, take care =))

Day 8 - Budapest
Today was a relatively relaxed day for us. Started off the day with a visit to the parliament, then went on to the house of terror for a brief walk in history and we collected a whole pile of lecture notes to be studied on our long train rides in the future. pretty elaborated interior which really sets the mood of the individual rooms, its one of the museums which i had enjoyed most. a pity that the majority of the videos, captions and audio guides are in hungrarian.
went to margit island in the afternoon to be greeted by hordes of kids. i have no idea wat is the occasion but prolly its a national kids day or kids excursion day or watsoever. the island was pretty boring though and hence we went to this chiill out place recommended in my lets go guide - kiado - to have a sip of coffee, and its one of the nicest latte ive ever tasted. the ambience is warm and relaxing too. Dinner was at this atas place called Menza, with rather poor service, and though i enjoyed the food, that will be the first and last time i would be there. the night ended with a walk down the river, takin snapshots of budapest at night.
alright gotta go! =)

Day 7 -Buda
Starting the day with a visit to the great Synagogue, i see the reason for it being europe's largest synagogue. it was designed to hold 3000 worshippers, with an enormous tree of life which holds the names of a family that perished during the holoucast. The walk thru history pertaining to the holocaust was particularly sad as it depicts the sufferings and thoughts of the jewish during the holocaust.
Strolling through Buda, Buda is on the east bank of Danube, sprawling between the base of Varhegy (Castle hill) and Gellerthegy. It leads into the city's main residential area and seems more peaceful than pest.
First up, the hike up to the castle district. Matthias Church was the first to greet us on our way up. Not very impressive i feel, as the architecture seems very modern due to its recent reconstruction after being razed 3 times in its history. The view from Buda castle was impressive though, but that impression only lasted a while till we reach the peak of Gellert Hill.
It was an ardous trek up gellert hill, but the rewards were sweet. Great views enroute the trek keeps us motivated to reach the statue high up on the hill. And though everyone was tired after reaching the peak, we managed to catch a few snapshots and videos up on the tallest point in budapest.

Day 6 in Hungary
The day was spent with a walk in pest, with highlights from the St Stephen's Basilica, which is the city's largest church. The panorama tower offers an amazing 360 degree view of the city. A curious attraction is St Stephens's mummified right hand, one of Hungary's most revered artifact.
Visited the Heros square, and its is a big open square with statues commemeorating the nation's most prominent leaders. Was really impressed with the grandness of the statues and the square.
Well, people are generally very frenly here in budapest, not as racist compared to colonge. also, weather is cooler here, as there are quite a lot of clouds. lotsa shopping here.. HnM, adidas, etc..
gg to eat breakfast! we cooked pasta~~!! haha =)

Crazy day 4 -5
Supposedly to land in budapest via a 10am flight on day 4, but as quoted from chio every europe traveller must experience what every europe traveller muz experience -- sleeping in airport - at least once.
Reach frankfurt mainz airport at 8, to find out that our flight departs from another airport, frankfurt hahn! and its a freaking 1 and a half hours journey there! 2 options - pia by cab down, or book a new flight. Our "frenly" taxi drivers never fail to kan cai tou (chop vege head) by quoting as 180 euros for a trip to the hahn airport. thats freaking 360 sgd! So we decided to screw the flight and get a new flight. Well, the internet terminal in the airport is built for desperate ppl like us. Its a freaking money eater! We fed it at least 40 plus euros to try bookin our new flight, only to be greeted by a transaction cannot be processed error. apparently we cannot book online a flight which is flying on the same day. next up, trying to call ryanairs up. the operator doesnt understand english, and the direct number doesnt work. Did i mention tat the phone is our money sucking machine number 2? woohoo! =)
so wats our last option? catch the shuttle bus to hahn, which costs us 18 euros. well, nice view along the way.. yellow fields of flowers with mountaineous backdrop greeted us along the way and its really beautiful. Reached hahn, and booked a next day flight to budapest at 10am for 75 euros. and we have 24 hours to kill, so decided to hop on a bus to COLONGE!
2 hours later, we arrived in colonge. We saw Germany's greatest cathedral, the DOM, and boy it is the biggest kick ass cathedral i have ever seen. its damn big!! build over 6 centuries, its colossal spires define the skyline of colonge. Visited the Schokoladenmuseum, which is a Willy wonka made real. It present every step of chocolate production, and we had even free chocolate wafers to munch on! tried a chocolate beer and chocolate wine and the later taste really good, but to down one bottle of it will definately ensure a bleeding nose the next day cuz its like concentrated chocolate plus alcohol.
Apparently tat nite was the finals of the german league, and the colonge ppl were all hyped up over their win and the whole place was quite rowdy. The team song was resounding everywhere in colonge and ppl were a bit wild and drunk. we saw fights, lots of broken glass on the floor, and kayping even got a kiss from a hyped up colonge supported on the way who was trying to express his frenliness. ha =)
had much fun, and everyone basically concuss on the bus ride back to hahn, and the sleep on the floors of hahn airport, and we were glad when we reached budapest. one bad thing was zibin got into a hungarian scam.. 2 hungarian women asked him for a drink, and in the end he had to fork out 40k Ft for the bill, thats around 300 SGD, and got his hp and camera stolen. lodged a police report and hopefully he can claim from his insurance.
cost of the money eating internet machine = 40 euros
cost of the money eating phone = 20 euros
cost of the air ticket to budapest = 75 euros more
cost of the stupid toliet in colonge = 0.50-7euros (yes 7 euros wth)
cost of reachin hostel in budapest takin a good bath and sleeping = priceless
alright.. all ready to explore budapest. WOOOT!

Day 3 was spent in Heidelberg, a beautiful universitat town. though i've seen more pretty castles in Frediskberg and Neuswantein, this one is the renmants of the castle from previous allied bombings during the war. the ruins are on top of a hill and an interesting part of the day was our climb up the 30 deg slope to the castle top. somehow we missed the funicular up. the whole afternoon was spent camwhoring on top of the mountains and takin videos too.
a bit shagged. gg to catch a plane to budapest now.

2nd day at Frankfurt!
Alright, admittedly Frankfurt isnt really a touristy area. Its more of a economical and business district. Neververtheless, the day started off well with a buffet breakfast which was fantastic while we tried our best at ta-baoing our lunch. heh.. after bf saw the most worth-it 3 euros spent in my whole life - entrance fee to a 200 meters tall observation platform atop a building in their CBD district. why issit so worth it? cuz we spent a few hours up there snapping videos and photos of us doing stupid things and enjoying ourselves! hah
went back to hostel to wait for mq and wj to reach and next up was the walk to Zeil, the shopping district, where H&M, adidas etc and practically the whole of Frankfurt population was there. Prolly its friday nite, and hence the shopping district is damn crowded with the locals.
Dinner was spent at the lonely planet recommended restaurant Adolf Wagner where i had the best potato ever! had a mixed grill with pork n beef fillet, bacon, bratwurst and Frankfurt's famous apple cider and had fun teaching the locals how we yam seng in sg. The locals got this tradition of a bachelor or spinster party which was held juz b4 they get married. they will go around all guys or all girls and offer to sell little things or perform acts for a nominal fee, around 1 euros. so this group of guys approached us and offered us some little items or the chance to cut a piece of his pants. we chose the later and it was all good.. ha =)
ok time to go eat the buffet breakfast. haha =)

alright a quick update before breakfast!
to darling, im safe and sound over here.. dun worry about me k? ´=)
currently in the Germanz city of Frankfurt. Being a business and convention oriented town, there isnt much touristy stuff here. Was here last summer and this place does brings back a lot of memories, especially the picturisque Rohmer buildings which look straight out of a fairytale book.
First day was spent roaming around old town Rohmer, visiting Palmengarten, and having dinner along the river on a floating eatery by the river. Loved the ambience, love the weather.
Cant upload photos as this com has no usb port available. so, tatazz gg for buffet breakfast =)

was surfing around and chanced upon this:
"When a GIRL is quiet ... millions of things are running in her mind. When a GIRL is not arguing ... she is thinking deeply. When a GIRL looks at u with eyes full of questions ... she is wondering how long you will be around. When a GIRL answers " I'm fine " after a few seconds ... she is not at all fine.
When a GIRL stares at you ... she is wondering why you are lying. When a GIRL lays on your chest ... she is wishing for you to be hers forever. When a GIRL wants to see you everyday... she wants to be pampered. When a GIRL says " I love you " ... she means it. When a GIRL says " I miss you " ... no one in this world can miss you more than that."
heh. true to a certain extent. anione can comment on this? ha =)

+x~**UPLOADED A NEW SONG!!!! **~x+found the lyrics very meaningful.. =)
Sometimes When We TouchYou ask me if I love you
And I choke on my reply
I'd rather hurt you honestly
Than mislead you with a lie
And who am I to judge you
On what you say or do?
I'm only just beginning to see the real you
And sometimes when we touch
The honesty's too much
And I have to close my eyes and hide
I wanna hold you til I die
Til we both break down and cry
I wanna hold you till the fear in me subsides
Romance and all its strategy
Leaves me battling with my pride
But through the insecurity
Some tenderness survives
I'm just another writer
Still trapped within my truth
A hesitant prize fighter
Still trapped within my youth
And sometimes when we touch
The honesty's too much
And I have to close my eyes and hide
I wanna hold you til I die
Til we both break down and cry
I wanna hold you till the fear in me subsides
At times I'd like to break you
And drive you to your knees
At times I'd like to break through
And hold you endlessly
At times I understand you
And I know how hard you've tried
I've watched while love commands you
And I've watched love pass you by
At times I think we're drifters
Still searching for a friend
A brother or a sister
But then the passion flares again
And sometimes when we touch
The honesty's too much
And I have to close my eyes and hide
I wanna hold you til I die
Til we both break down and cry
I wanna hold you till the fear in me subsides

A coupled of shots taken at city hall which turned out too grainy.. even after intensive PS treatment. lesson learnt: never use ISO800 and above for pictures.
tried taking in RAW, and was amazed at the myriad of options available for post processing from RAW files. woot.. but the drawback - it eats up my memory card like a big fat gigantic megazord.
Thanks darling for the ai xin nuggets! i love them.. =)))

While typing my thesis, instead of putting the usual "blah blah blah in this new field blah blah significant work can be done blah blah blah to bring a new dimension into the study of this field blah blah blah" i'm so tempted to put the following in the section motivations for my project.
"Chapter 1 Introduction
...
...
....
1.1 Theoretical Considerations
...
..
...
....
1.2 Motivations for doing this project
dun do cannot grad la! "

i love working in lab at night.
cuz there's no one to fight with me for the equipment.
and the quietness which keeps me in focus. =)
well, tried a new program photomatix to process hdr photos. surprisingly it works much better than PS. besides the blurry aspect (due to camera adjustment in taking 3 photos of different exposures), the effect is quite good - with deep colour saturation and high contrast. next up - try this again with a RAW image file, which will totally remove any blur parts. =)

its official.
I'm a workaholic.
I love the feeling of being busy.
Day time i'm a full time researcher.
Night time, a budding thesis thinker.
I'm feeling alive again.
and it's good.
now to make sure I don't burn out before 20th March.
=)
couple of upcoming events to tide me over this busy period. jc outing next tuesday and a possible kbox overnight session with hall friends. havn't seen my jc classmates for a long time; the girls are happily in their 2nd or 3rd year of working, and the guys our last semester. wonder how would our conversation change.
from gossips about possible couples during pe lesson,
discussing about the cute girls in the S6 combi,
lamenting abt girls in double maths combi (opps.)
copying of homework as a SOP every morning at the steps before national anthem.
teasing mr LAHHHHHH
playing basketball in heat proof water proof long pants and thick uniforms
to
army talk (90% of the time during outings when we were in NS)
to
work prospects?
marriage?
cars?
Similarly, our venues for outing had progress.
From KAP, 6ave, coronation, eating mac, drinking coke, to timbre, brewerkz, with all the alcohol.
decadence is good sometimes.
but i miss the past, when things appear so simple yah?
i would have treasure you more instead of dwelling on school work, and things might be vastly different for now.
who knows, i might be still doing thesis, albeit at where Uncle Sam is.
but for now, i'm contended with my life, thankful to all the people in my life.
and i should prolly get back to my thesis. which is 1/50 done.
P/S: in dire need of money. MOE quick reimburse us!

The sky was really beautiful today. Went out for a quick dinner at botak jones with ck and took these random photos.
Considering whether to buy a 50mm/f1.8 prime (SGD120) and a 70-300mm f/4-5.6 (SGD150 2nd hand) for my travel to europe. of course, my dream lens is still the 10-22mm which costs 1.2k.. perfect for scenery shots, perfect for ruining my bank account too.
anyone feels like contributing to allan-tour-europe fund?

was chatting with xinyi my fellow TSL with regards to a common year 4 foe: FYP, life in NIE, and stuff, and chanced upon this thing that she said:
"don't treat others as ur priority when u r only an option to them"my sentiments exactly! cruel world it is but i would rather spend my time with those deserving of it. =) it was a arduous journey realising that but im glad i did.
1 month to submission of thesis.
and im still having no results.
no data
no graph
no video.
i sleep every night with my brain dead, body dead beat.
whoever says last year is a relax year has either no FYP to do or he's mad.

I went into lab today doing what i had been doing for the past few weeks - experiment. My prof paid me an unexpected visit and asked me a question which shocked the breakfast out of me (almost):
"Are you ready for your talk?"
Apparently, i've a fyp 2nd presentation this coming wednesday, and our dear coordinating prof (which is not my fyp prof) didn't inform us at all. No emails, no notification, never even replied our email with regards to the date of the presentation. And i thank my luck for the unexpected meeting with my prof, without which i wouldn't have known about the presentation, which is an important one as it is graded.
World class university with world class lecturer eh?

Happy Chinese New Year!!
CNY this year was spent collecting ang paos as usual but something new this year was that we visited Sentosa flower exhibition and 春到河畔 at esplanade park. Weather's a tat hot these few days but its all worth it =)
Took some self portraits with the 50mm f1.4 lens and realised why people on forums said its THE LENS for taking portraits. But the mafan thing is its not a zoom lens so it's not suitable as a travelling lens.

Another try at HDR @ Labrador park. =)

HDR photography
First try at HDR photography.
In photography, high dynamic range imaging (HDRI) is a set of techniques that allows a greater dynamic range of exposures(the range of values between light and dark areas) than normal digital imaging techniques. The intention of HDRI is to accurately represent the wide range of intensity levels found in real scenes ranging from direct sunlight to shadows. Basically, I took 3 bracketed exposures of a subject and merge it using photoshop via the process of tone mapping.
Going to try this out more. The drawback is that i will need to take 3 shots per subject and the large amount of time spent processing the image.
Since mq commented on my ugly logo, i have changed it to a nicer and more modern looking one. woot!

Arab Street & Malay Heritage Village
Took a casual stroll around this nice quiet part of bugis. It intrigues me to find so many instances of contrast and comparison. The old vs the new. The traditional vs the modern. I guess a picture's worth a million words and since i won't be writing a million words the last picture of the rickshaw facing the modern buildings captured the essence of my feelings then.
Watched Cloverfield. FANTASTIC. it was damn short. it has no ending. but this is the first time im glued to the screen from beginning to the end of a movie. The excitment just keeps on building up. For other normal action shows, there are low periods of conversation and boring stuff and then short action sequences. For Cloverfield it was action all the way from start till end! The story is viewed from the perspective of a camcorder, and it captures the excitment, adrenaline rush and fear of the owner so realistically that i feel right smack in the middle of the movie! Wonderful show.. =)

I LOVE MY HOME PC.

After 6 days of looking at my fujitsu 13.3 inch 1024 by 768 screen, it is indeed shiok to enjoy my 20 inch 1680 by 1050 widescreen! Why? Cuz i can play games at high resolution, view videos comfortably on my bed, and most importantly i can set my stitched panoramic scenic photos as wallpaper! WOOT!

Shyuan asked me whether will I think of them when they are away. Ha i didnt answer but tataz the answer is quite obvious ba. guys are damn ego and we won't lao ba sai or stuff like tat =p. but sian no more studying partner no more ponding adventures no more food escapades no more emo-boy-come-my-room-to-talk-cock. and yes i think i do miss them. heh. see u all in 1 yr time and pls. dun bring any ah tiong gf back!
bon voyage bros!

Since we have some time to kill before the bus picks us up, we decided to explore terminal 3 and boy i loved that place! the whole architecture is centered on the effective portrayal of space. it is just soo spacious. However it does look a bit like the airport in hong kong though. presenting to you, some random photos i took. =)

Presenting to you, my favourite food of all times -- BA CHOU MEE
Now if you ask me where's the nicest ba chou mee in Singapore, i would tell you undoubtedly its from Meng's Kitchen on upper thomson road, near the prata house. Succulent mee pok, savoury mushroom, steamed to perfection minced meat, and to wrap up everything, excellent service. WOOT. everyone go try! =) im so sad there isn't any ba chou mee in europe or toronto. maybe one day i will bring ba chou mee over there should i wanna migrate to the states. (so that i can continue to enjoy my ba chou mee away fr home!)
